I was not fond of being the cashier at [office supply store]®, but I am quite grateful the equipment basically never malfunctioned, scanned almost anything the first time, and basically never miscalculated an advertised sale price or anything like that (coupons, price matches, and special offers were another story, but I feel that’s more of a human problem anyway; obviously managers would have some leeway to close a sale).

I recall one time we had to take credit card purchases during a... power outage? dialup problem? forget which. Anyway, not only did we have an imprinter, we had someone around who knew where it was stowed away and how to use it. Blew my mind, I hadn’t seen one of them since I was, like, 2.

The flakiest part of the system was that customer-facing card reader that ends up getting replaced every few years.

Well, I suppose that’s all about the actual Greek pronunciation, but I honestly can’t fault people for using the standard Anglicized Latinized Greek of the exact same ancient word (as in “gyroscope”). The general topic is a minefield to begin with.

Sometimes, when getting change back from a store, I don't notice until later that they've given me invalid currency, and now I have a collection of foreign coins because I fear that if I try to use them I'll get in trouble.

Also because they look super cool.

I'm thinking of starting a collection of valid but defaced currency because it says a lot about human nature.
