you pick up the key.

The key goes in the inventory screen. Now if you run into a lock, you can use the key to open the lock.

Your 2007 meter goes up a really shitty small insignificant amount. your key is now fully depleted and has vanished from your inventory. You'll need to find another key - and fast!
