a52's Ear Infection Adventure

warning: gross
I went to the doctor today to get a check up on what I thought was a recurring inner-ear infection. He couldn't look at my eardrum, though, because apparently there was too much earwax. He pulled out about one pea's-worth of normal wax from my healthy ear. All of a sudden I could hear twice as well, and I figured that that was what was wrong with the other one, too. Simple problem, simple solution, right? My infected ear was another story. He pulled about two peas of black, congealed earwax with a plastic rod. Already twice as much as was in my other ear, it wasn't enough. He got a thinner metal rod out, and retrieved more bloodied wax, this time covered in runny brown pus. That still wasn't enough to even see my eardrum to see if my inner ear was infected, but at that point it was too inflamed to get anymore out. It also hurt like hell. He gave me some drops to reduce inflammation and get rid of the remaining wax, and I'll see him in a week to see if my inner ear is actually infected or not. I'm pretty sure it is. I'm now acutely aware of each square millimeter of the surface of my ear canal, and the sharp, stabbing pain of my outer ear feels very different to the dull, throbbing pain that I came in with. Long story short, my ear hurts worse even than before, the extra inflammation makes it impossible to hear anything on my left side, and I learned that I likely managed to get some form of outer-ear infection as well as an inner-ear one.

Lmao whoops thanks anyway the dozen kids (including the east-european exchange student) in the 2nd year English Expression elective class have a three-week project to try make a short film in (imo very optimistic) time for the school culture festival. We divvied them up into two groups so there's a decent chance everyone actually does some work and we still get this finished. After fifteen minutes of brainstorming they settle on retelling Japanese fairytales, namely Momotaro/Peach Boy and the Tale of Princess Kaguya. By the end of the period this has become a full-on crossover pair of intertwined films, where a vagrant peach wanders through multiple scenes, baby Momotaro guns his way out of the eponymous fruit, and on his adventures befriends assorted fauna of Eastern Europe, more badass than the original version. I had to go to a separate class in the second half of the lesson but when I left off they were discussing logistics of how to transport the party to the goddamn moon to rescue Princess Kaguya. A bear bodily throwing a wolf into orbit came up and while I'm doubtful they will actually get this published on time I am very hype

Unrelated: should I start a tally for the number of times Mitch starts telling me something without any kind of social nicety like "good morning" or "hello"

I should note I don't think I've ever small-talked with Mitch so when we do talk, she's letting me know about what I'm supposed to be doing in her class that day (I'll (usually) be told the afternoon before if it's a morning class) or asking for my input on something or another she's written up
Idk like, it's just, normally at work when you see someone for the first time that day you'd say hi, or hello, or morning, or otherwise greet 'em before getting them to do something for you, but this woman is no preamble and I've lost all sense of whether that's normal for Japan, normal in general, or I'm working with someone who just does not know/care how to People

An absolutely fuckmassive storm hit my area last night. Apparently it was a typhoon from all the way across the Pacific. We got a whole bunch of rain (which isn't at all unusual in western Washington), but we also got thunder and lightning, and a tornado warning.
For those who don't live in the US or don't know much about Washington, tornadoes only ever happen in dry, flat areas, like Kansas or whatever. Western Washington is all trees, rain, and hills. Tornadoes are unheard of here (although earthquakes are fairly common). We rarely get strong wind. It's similar with lightning. Even though we probably get the most inches of rain per year in all of North America and our idea of a rainy day is a Idahoan's idea of a tropical storm, we rarely ever get lightning for some reason. To get tornadoes and lightning in one night, as well as rainfall that seems strong even to a gray-skinned Washingtonian like me, means an absolute whoopass of a storm.

Sorry that this is coming out of the blue. I didn't really want to stir anything too serious, but this is the only place I remember where I could bring something like this up.
Two years ago I was known by the moniker of Hobbesy. A lot has changed since then, and it's weighed somewhat heavily on my heart on how terrible of a person I was then. When I was younger I stepped on the toes of a great many people, many of who are still active here. I wanted to come back and sort of apologize for what I used to be like as a person. Quite a bit has changed since then, in various, drastic ways, and I've gone to some great length to not personally allude to what life was like for me back in those days. In some discussion and light chat with the few I've kept up with I realized I never really ever said sorry to anyone, and in the back of my mind it's always been something I wanted to do. As for particulars, well, there's far too much to go over to get into any of that, and some of it tends to be a bit personal. I'm not sure how well received it would by those involved if I brought it up directly, and for the sake of not going out of my way to do that I won't publicly. That said, if anyone wants to talk, I'm more than open, and I'd honestly somewhat relish the idea of getting to sort out anything that's been left over.

Hey Stovie, good to hear you're in a better place. I didn't know Hobbesy, but it's encouraging to see someone step up to any past actions they may have had. I think a lot of folks, myself included, are familiar with regretting being a bit of an asshat from time to time. So know that you're in good company. There's always a chance to start fresh when you need to.

I read a whole book instead of going to bed (hi Sol this is how I tell you I am going to bed at 4 am and then also wake up at or past 4 pm) but now my brain is still fully enabled and I feel like I have to buy and start reading another book to get it to wind down.
I think this technique has lost a significant amount of effectivity for me, also I'm asking everyone for Amazon kindle vouchers for Christmas. |
