Steam Summer Giveaway 2014
07-07-2014, 08:17 PM
(This post was last modified: 08-04-2014, 07:47 AM by Coldblooded.)
So, as most of you probably aren't aware, Palamedes and I are currently running a game giveaway thread over on the other OTHER forum. (You know, the one with the black color scheme instead of the gray or the white one? Yeah, that one.) Basically the idea is that we buy games when they're on sale for super cheap on Steam, and then we just throw 'em all in a pile and sort it out so that everybody gets something new.
But apparently I severely underestimated the generosity of some of our donors, because there's currently way more games up for grabs than there are people actually signing up to receive them. I mean, this originally started out as a much smaller thing, but I guess it just decided to roll itself into a big, multi-forum giveaway all on its own? Okay whatever, I'll roll with it.
Anyway, it works like this. You sign up for this game and then come back to poke your head into the thread every few days for the next month or so, and in return you get a free game on Steam, no strings attached. We're going to be cross-posting everything that happens on the Choco Pi Forums over here and vice versa, so you won't even have to sign up for a new forum account or anything. You will have to have a Steam account though, obviously.
_______________________________________________________________
The Rules: Every single game up for grabs will be revealed right at the very beginning of the game. (Or a bit before, more likely.) Every player is then given 100 points to divide among whichever games that they like best. After everybody has distributed their points, we will then determine the winners of the four most popular games currently on the table. The more points that somebody has placed into a game, the better their odds of walking away with it.
Show Content
SpoilerFor example, imagine that a game has 200 points on it, with the points distributed like so:
Player A - 100 points
Player B - 50 points
Player C - 25 points
Player D - 25 points
Player A has a 50% of winning that game since they have 50% of the points sitting on it right now. Player B has a 25% chance of winning it, and Players C and D each have a 12.5% chance of winning it. If any other players decide to jump onto the game before the deadline, it drags down the odds for each of the other four players by however many points that they happen to throw in.
If Player D decides that they don't like sharing these odds with the rest of the pack, they can always pull back out and move those points elsewhere.
Alright, so let's say that you placed all of your points into the very popular games in the first round, and didn't win any of them. That sucks right? Well yeah, but it's not the end of the world. At the end of each round, the lucky winners will each receive the game that they won via Steam and then leave the game. The remaining players will each receive another 25 points as a consolation prize, and will be given another 48 hours to distribute them before the next round begins. Rinse and repeat until every single player is matched up with a game.
_______________________________________________________________
By the way, if you're one of those people who tend to feel guilty accepting things for free, please don't. I can promise you that if you don't take it, the game will likely just end up sitting around unplayed in somebody's Steam inventory for the indefinite future. So really there's no reason to not sign up. Plus, something about the strengthening of inter-forum bonds and alliances to protect us from 4chan invaders and all that jazz.
P.S. Special thanks to Palamedes, Kocel, Demonsul, Amosmyn, and Vancho for their game donations, and for helping to get this thing off the ground. You guys are great.

Is it too late to throw more games into the pot? I'd feel bad taking games without at least a symbolic gesture of giving.

Sure thing, but keep in mind that we've got a pretty big pot already, so there's definitely nothing wrong with not throwing in anything extra right now.
If this one goes well though, we might try to do something similar next year too, so I guess you could always wait until the next sale to get something at a more reasonable price and throw it in next year if that makes you feel any better?

Alas, I missed my wonderful second co-mod spot.
I will say that those of you who can't get your hands on Bad Rats won't have to be too disappointed, we have a couple other odd (read: terrible) backup options to win as well.

If I hear one more limp-wristed noncommittal response to some people who are doing a cool, generous thing, I will punch one lucky entitled asshat straight into the sun.
Jesus, learn to show some gratitude.

I want videogames, but I don't want people to think I'm a tryhard.
I'd also swear I already signed up for this but apparently not? I'd like to be in please. Thanks for setting this up, it's pretty cool.

*While I would like to try my luck at perhaps getting an interesting game I have not been acquainted with, I already have games that which I have yet to play. Therefore, I will enter for the fun of it, perhaps bidding here or there, but without expecting anything in particular. My apologies for my earlier bluntness, for my body has been colonized by viruses and I was not thinking straight.
