I suspect perhaps not for a generation or two, if that. Sexism (and basically all the other isms) is pretty ingrained in the culture and consumption of gaming as a whole.

I just realized that Peach getting kidnapped in Sunshine is completely narratively irrelevant. The actual story is that Bowser Jr. is exacting revenge on Mario for constantly fucking with his dad, and Mario needs to restore sunshine to Isle Delfino. Peach just gets kidnapped because That's What Happens In Mario.

They just stuck her in there because she couldn't be absent, but apparently it was completely impossible that she exist without getting kidnapped, even if it does not actually drive the story.

God damn it, Nintendo.

To play devil's advocate, she was at least involved in the story, in that Bowser Jr. was trying to determine if she was his mother. Granted, that's not a role with any agency, and there wasn't any real reason to kidnap her, but she at least wasn't completely irrelevant.

thinking about it a lot of nintendo games rely on the premise that X is missing/stolen and you have to get it, princesses, bananas, baby luigi/metroid...
