GRASSHOPPER UPDATE: (PROBLEM SOLVED)
I tried it again. I caught a katydid nymph from outside and brought it in for a fun temporary pet.
The little one rushed outside to plop a buncha grass in some tupperwear. Excitedly, she came back and started moving the little guy into his temporary habitat.
SCREAMS (not one minute later) fill the room.
I come back to see my kiddo in tears and a katydid head ripped off of the body and it's jaws firmly latched into her thumb. Apparently the thing's jaws got through a layer or two of skin and when she tried to pull away, the connection between head and body was much weaker than the connection between mandible and hand.
So, there we go, a proper, healthy formative experience with death.
