Your suit is reporting on the amount of water that is stored in the porthole. You don't have access to it here.

That would be a good idea, but you would need to figure out how to force the doors open while the elevator is moving...

You won't say that you didn't think about it, but if your suit fails, you're worried that all of the goo will be released at once... which would not be good for anyone else here.
