For a wooden window frame circa 1912 you'd want to use something with high viscosity, like grease or wax, which would have to be rubbed on the rails. Soaking it with oil would make the wood swell, and cause the window to become completely stuck ... but probably not right away, so I guess if you just need to open the window right now and are not worried about closing it again, this is a viable option.
