That's ok! I never explicitly learned about them either, to the point I had to translate the Japanese name for them to find out what their deal is. It's one of those things you don't really think about how a language does it, so getting my students to understand you use this for "this isn't real, but if it were*..." was a fun challenge.
Also it's legitimately my favorite thing when a student wants to write something that doesn't quite fit the template I've given them. (They'll often think "oh I shouldn't write that then" and I'll be like "no! That's a wonderful idea let's write it down")
