For years, the Rigby family have praised themselves in their physical and moral strength and manliness. To them, manliness is many things, not just qualities that are normally attributed to males, but a set of virtues, adaptable for any gender, that focus on being the very example of a Great Member of the human race.
These virtues include your general fare of being nice and respectful to all, keeping your chin up and making the best with what you have, and being the best there ever was. Each of the Rigby's make it their mission to live by these and many other virtues, and those who shun them are in turn shunned by the rest of the family. A True Rigby will never be afraid to step forward for a friend, save a stranger, or stop a random act of injustice. They are FOREVER MANLY TO ALL.
Now, while Port Town wasn't the first choice for this branch of the Rigby family to settle down in, the potential to meet new people was too difficult to avoid. With all of the tourists going around, it is no surprise that a Rigby would see it upon themselves to make sure that everything goes along smoothly and that no foreigner gets scammed!
Gordon and Patricia Rigby's only son, Bastion Rigby has been interested in the families virtues since the moment that he could understand them. While other children were figuring out what they would be and how they would do things in the future, or not doing that as the case may be, Bastion knew that he would do something that would represent his family and their virtues well.
The child had a small pitfall, at least in the eyes of others, that would stop him from being "the best" as he always claimed he would. One day at school, someone let loose a fully evolved Pokemon into the school. The children panicked, running around and hoping to avoid the Dugtrio's rampage. Though the Pokemon did not bury the school, the cracks and tremors injured many poor children. Originally, Bastion was not among them, however, being the brash and brave child he was, he returned into the school to try to save his less physically fit friends. In the ensuing chaos, Bastion (accidentally) confronted the Dugtrio by himself. The confrontation was short, but it lasted in Bastion's mind, making him adverse to fully evolved Pokemon, even that of his parents for a time.
At the age of twelve, Bastion decided that it was time for him to go out and forward into the world, saying that he had learned all that he could from Port Town and that he would benefit more from traveling than from staying put and waiting. After a few delays, waiting for his loving Hrothgar the Igglybuff to hatch and grow a bit stronger, for the local Professor to come back to town, and for a group of people who wanted to travel around to show up, he was finally ready. With the heirlooms of his family in hand, Bastion Rigby, dressed in his khaki pants, red and white sneakers, a grey striped shirt, a blue blazer jacket, and a black baseball cap (hats are really in right now), and Hrothgar the Igglybuff were just a walk to Professor Cork's away from going out to the world and starting on their journey to become to become the best and most manly possible.
