August Short Story Challenge!

This is a writing challenge. Over the course of August, write four short stories - that works out to one a week.
The short stories should be linked, but should all have different main characters. How they're linked is up to you; maybe they take place in the same room, maybe they all involve a single object. Or perhaps different stories are linked in different ways. Just don't write two stories about the same main character; that character can still appear, and affect the plot, but shouldn't have a central role.
You can even, if you're so inclined, sneak a reference in one week's story to an event you're planning in the next one. But this is optional. The basic idea is to write four different, yet related stories over the course of a month.
I'm doing this, naturally; anyone else who's interested is free to give it a shot, and to post their stories in here when they finish.
