There's probably marketing reasons why producers wouldn't want obscenely large numbers next to their sequel titles.

Besides, they could have gone with, like, a subtitle or something if it qualifies as a spinoff. I really wish I could say that I'm surprised by this...
On another subject, I've been enjoying Saints Row IV. I was a bit surprised at how much fun the mobility superpowers are, but even after a whole bunch of time sunk into that game, leaping from building to building is still a blast.

I have a sinking suspicion that all kinds of companies are ready to jump on that train, with or without legal permission. It's a logical extension of project placement, especially with the current internet's advertising=profit business model.
And there I was, at least hoping for android replacement bodies and vibro-katanas by the time the cyberpunk dystopia arrived :U

Did anyone mention how King, owners of Candy Crush Saga, successfully trademarked the word Candy yet?
Or how they are also pursuing legal action against indie games that have the word "Saga" in their titles? Even ones with a more faithful use of the meaning of the word Saga than the one used by King themselves, as the game in question actually is a medieval prose narrative with Old Norse or Old Icelandic themes (These studios they are targetting you may note, lack adequate funds to mount a strong legal defence) what a wonderful system, I'm glad the Old Norse themed game I'm employed to write went with a one word title, we easily could have fallen into the Saga trap ourselves...

I took a class on basically this subject, and the thing is that US trademark law basically requires you to file frivolous lawsuits against anyone using a similar mark, because if you don't you lose the trademark. Fucked up but true.
Assuming they did somehow get a trademark on the word "Saga", anyone who wanted to challenge King could use the fact that they didn't sue over The Banner Saga as evidence that they should lose the trademark, and that actually might hold up in court. It's happened before. (Of course it's still totally stupid and very against the letter of the law for the trademark office to award a trademark on an entire word, but that's another issue.)

Did you mention that merely to play devil's advocate? Like... you even mentioned yourself that it's not really relevant.
Yeah they have to battle everyone who infringes on it to retain their trademark but when their trademarks are separate singular common english words they deserve to lose it anyway. If literally anyone battled them in court they should lose regardless of if they defended their ridiculous trademark or not.

I was just trying to elucidate their motivation for suing the Banner Saga developers. I didn't make that clear, sorry.
My point was, they're not just doing this because they're an evil corporate empire, they want ridiculous trademarks so they can sue and shut down their /actual/ competitors in the mobile casual game business, but to /get/ ridiculous trademarks you need to bring lawsuits against people that you don't actually care about. e: Oh, and my other point is that, if King's just going through the motions and not out for blood, it will probably be ok.

but despite this, they are actually still doing it because they're an evil corporate empire because it's still evil to shut down your competitors by making it illegal for them to use the word "candy"

Wait, couldn't you fast-forward through it on a second run by holding down B, like I think you could in Ace Attorney?
