The man sighs, looking down below over the side of the toppled tower splinter, seeming older than his years for a moment. Then he looks you in the eye and that weakness is gone.
"You dont understand. Your quest is foolish and you are doomed to die, whether I will it or not. This is a god. Not one of the forgotten saints the church honors by calling them gods and worshipping their names. An actual, almighty vengeful god. Your ally below with the sword, he struggles against my guardsmen even now, fighting with skill and ferocity against what, to one man, is overwhelming odds. I do not doubt that if i let this man, he would kill me with a simple stroke of the sword. So, then, why do i not reach out in this moment and tear him asunder with my all-powerful magic? Within the walls of this fortress, i have absolute control. It would be easy." His arm twitches as if to do so, but he stops. "Also pointless. He bleeds already, slowly retreating from my soldiers. Soon he will be dead, with or without my interference. He is insignifant. As is the case with you and the dark god. Do not doubt that he could not simply reach out of the sky and tear you asunder at any moment if he so desired. Surely, if he truly feared you he would have done so already. Or do you believe that that sword would save you? It is as worthless as the one carried by your friend below would be if i decided to be rid of him. No, you are doomed to die. You need only accept it.
You are right about one thing. I have despaired. All within this city save those who were within this fortress two hours ago are dead, their souls lost forever. I could do nothing, as i can do nothing for the rest of my kingdom. Why would he take them - civilians, innocents, fathers and mothers and children, but not you, the great hero, here to save us all?
You speak of hope? Here is mine. If i slay you and all of your allies then shatter the soultraps you carry... then perhaps - just perhaps - the wrath of the dark god will be sated. Though I know not the motivations of this god, i have proven powerless to fight him in any other way. Thousands die by the minute, if not more. Blood flows across the world. I would sacrifice you a hundred times over just on the sliver of a chance that I could stop that. Can you honestly say you would not do the same if you had been King in my place? Truly, what can you hope to accomplish? All you have is the promise of hope and a few souls from the time of my father's reign - a time of terror and instability. They are nothing special, and neither are you. Providence will not save you, or this world. What chance do you honestly think you stand against a god? What chance could anyone stand?
You ask me to yield. I refuse. It is every mans right to follow what he believes to be true. If I am to be proven wrong then let fate have mercy on you, for I will not."
