traditional societies usually have male breadwinners due to cultural norms which have a patriarchal nature. males do the wage work while females perform what's called the "second shift", or unpaid labor that's necessary to the survival of the household unit. (this is not a statement that approves or condemns such a thing, it's not my place to make a moral judgment on a foreign culture)

polygamy has something to do with it too; many third world nations where water gathering is common (in africa and the middle east) have polygamist family structures so there are just more women and children in the household to do the work

The only way to change things based on structural problems for the better is to do unsexy thing - wheat
