Personally, if I'm really excited about a game, I'll try to play the preliminary build because it gives me a sneak peek. I played Cortex Command for like two years before 1.0 finally came out, and it didn't diminish my enjoyment of the game at all.

But basically public alphas/betas are just a way for developers to get free playtesting Melonspa
