Anybody suddenly finding themselves speaking and thinking in a different language, no longer able to speak their own language, would be justifiably concerned. Someone like Reuben on the other hand, who had grown up under the rule of IngSoc... It could have been so very liberating. It could have given him the vocabulary to finally express the thoughts and doubts that he had. It could have been the best thing that had ever happened to him. Unfortunately Reuben was loyal; to Big Brother, to IngSoc, to Oceania. He didn't want to rebel. This was undoubtedly some sort of crime. It would have been bad enough speaking the language of the Eastasians, but to be thinking it as well?
Rueben was miserable. He just wanted to be left alone to cry in a corner somewhere, except during the course of his adventures he had been turned into some kind of bizarre blob thing and he couldn't cry any more. Voices cried out in pain from throughout the Asylum, though he hadn't seen anyone, having remained in the cell where his core had materialised, only fearfully peering through the open door before slinking back inside out of fear. Other voices whispered through his head, none of them seemed to really be trying to talk to him, but he recognised one of the voices as what he had referred to as the unstandard part of him. It was a voice that the others referred to as Simon and there seemed to be a whispered argument in progress. Reuben did his best to ignore it. It was just one more thing he didn't want to deal with.
What he wouldn't give to be back in his apartment, sat in front of his telescreen, gulping down a bottle of Victory Gin or at the Ministry joining in with the Two Minutes Hate, instead of here in some dingy asylum in another world. In the distance he could hear something approaching. Heavy breathing, slow footsteps, metal scraping along the floor. A knot tightened in the pit of what had once been Rueben's stomach. He just wanted to be left alone. Why wouldn't people leave him alone?
