It's a game about lying to people and figuring out who is lying back to you.
Every person receives a role in secret, and is either part of a "town" or "mafia" team, or a third party who generally works alone. Each player has their own win condition, but generally people on the same team will have the same kind of condition to win.
Games work along day/night phases, where the day is generally spent conversing and in the night everyone is unable to post (because they are asleep) but people sneak out of their fictional houses to perform special actions on eachother.
People in the town attempt to root out the mafia players lurking amongst them by collectively voting on who to "lynch", based on who seems most suspicious, at which point that player is out of the game and their role is usually revealed to the world so you can see if you were right or not. It then moves on to night time when the mafia make their move.
Unlike Town players who only know their own identity, mafia players know who everyone in their team is and can communicate secretly at night. Their goal is to kill everyone in the town team, and every night they get to pick someone who dies, at which point day starts again (with the dead person's role being revealed etc).
This is then made more complicated by the addition of roles such as doctors, who can protect someone at night preventing the mafia from killing them, cops, who check one person per night to see if they are town or mafia, and roleblockers, who prevent other people from performing whatever action they were trying to do at night.
That's as short as I could make it and it's probably still not very good as an explanation, maybe you should just try reading one!
