“I want an underriver adventure!” Ginger pouted.

She and Fran were aboard the Kiste’s Own Catfly; the underboat that Fran had secured passage on during her exploration of the Delve city. The boat was captained, or rather undercaptained, by a muscular hyena lady (a hylai) with grey-brown fur, a billowing frock coat and a bright red panama hat with a black and white striped hatband. The undercrewmen called her Undercaptain Flax but she’d introduced herself to Fran and Ginger as Rusty.

The Kiste’s Own Catfly was a small vessel consisting of a passenger area above decks and a crew quarters below. At the stern of the boat was a large propeller made from some shining white metal, seemingly untouched by age.

The passenger area, where Fran and Ginger now waited impatiently, resembled, more than anything else, a weird sort of outdoor cafeteria. There were wooden benches and tables arranged in a couple of neat rows. At one end there was a little booth; the quartermaster’s kiosk, operated by Quartermaster Omara Velvet (a fox lady (volpa) in a dark blazer with cut short hair). At the other end was the prow of the ship itself, a small railing the only thing stopping Ginger from falling in as she oohed and ahhed at the caverns as the underboat passed through them. The only things that demarcated this as something other than an ordinary passenger boat were the wooden dummies in a rough humanoid shape; stick figures with a wooden sword and a wooden shield and a big frowny face. They were heavily scored and chipped as though regularly used for practice.

Around the underboat the tunnels they were sailing through were thin and twisty, winding this way and that, at some points getting uncomfortably narrow, though none of the undercrewmen seemed perturbed. Occasionally you could see pathways running alongside the river; underriver riverbanks with softly glowing flora and small scuttling creatures.

When they passed a group of barnabolds - little humanoid creatures with white squirming skin and huge hooked hands - squabbling on a ridge, Ginger had run up to the guardrail and stared in wonder at these weird little guys, before turning around and announcing:
“I want an underriver adventure!”

Leaving the Delve city had been chaotic. Apparently word had gotten around about the rainbow serpent (Fran presumed it was the snake the Baker had mentioned, whose name she struggled to remember) being on the rampage. The delve were panicking in the streets and it was the most dynamism she had experienced in the city up until that point. The crew of the Kiste’s Own Catfly had been loading up ready to leave and the pair had just made on board before they cast off. Not long after setting off their seasonal outfits gifted to them from Archon Chromagicus faded, leaving them dressed in their usual, and much more situationally appropriate, attire.

Fran was seated, fidgeting with the handle of Phaetix. “Ginger I’d really like to talk about what happened back in the city.”

“I wouldn’t.” Ginger said simply. “I want an underriver adventure.”
