There is a game I and a number of friends have been playing frequently in the last few months, called Space Station 13.

I have played this with them and I can attest that it is very fun. It has a "more is more" mentality, so it can seem amazingly obtuse, but the upshot is that it lets many more types of situations take place. It's sort of like Dwarf Fortress, except multiplayer and in space, in that regard.
