Yes, I acknowledge that if you follow that rule directly, you'll end up at the answer you're claiming. However, because of the way the initial problem is written, it's hard to say whether or not that method is the intent. The vagueness of the formatting gives the options of multiple interpretations. Just make sure to use parentheses in the future and you can avoid that problem.
