Name of this species: Pud

Short: Puds are sentient puddles that wear hazmat suits to keep themselves in instead of keeping anything out. Together they live in underground lake communities that cause sink holes, but the individuals that wear their suits are relatively harmless, unless you look straight into their eyes. Their bodies are EXTREMELY bright, which is only apparent through their eye holes in the suit. For this reason they’re known as the spotlight species. Puds are, at heart, pests. They get around, sometimes showing up unannounced from the bathtub drain, and dividing themselves into multiple puddles to be in more than one place at a time.

Woah, what are those ultra bright eyes in the dark???



It’s this little guy!!! A pud! (design not finalizedTM)



mini history: Puds are a species of spelunkers. They do not have a home planet, and instead were spread by accident. While puds appear as blobby creatures in air-tight suits, inside the suits are actually blazingly bright puddles of warm, sentient liquid. The suits are required to safely transport themselves without harming their friends and falling out of shape. Before their suits, miners had found the puddles of bright liquid and put them in jars and oil lamps in order to light up their mineshafts. When the mineshafts were abandoned, they left the jars behind, and the puds started to grow.

This was super convenient for the puds, being pest animals who thrived in caves. They were able to accumulate into one giant underground lake and burrow underneath forests to cause sinkholes. They were aiming to suck up firewood, breaking down their food externally and letting it float around in their full-body stomach, but a few towns managed to get thrown into the mix. Oops!

Some puds decided to stay in these underground lake communities, while others migrated through city pipelines to start their own way of life.

mini special: Because their vital parts are all liquified and mixed together, they work on “octopus logic” (like how octopuses have neurons in each of their eight arms). Say one puddle gets separated into two puddles: both puddles will still retain the memories and personality of the initial puddle because they contain enough brain in the sum of their parts. Each puddle is then able to function on its own until they finally merge back with the other half, which will share their memories with both halves. This is a useful trick! But most puds prefer staying in one piece since there’s always a chance that you’ll never be reunited with your other half. Some puds in the universe are just a missing half that never merged, leaving them to wander through space with a whole new set of memories and experiences, essentially making them their own person over time.

FUN FACT Puds only have the power to split into 4 separate parts before they lose too much of their brain, which means you can totally prick one and use its droplet of blood as a makeshift lightbulb without worrying that you just doomed a living person to sitting in the ceiling until they evaporate or starve.

They’re kinda like lava lamps. Some puds wear dull transparent suits so they don’t blind anybody but are still able to show people what they really look like.

mini behavior: Last but not least, puds are very observant, which is a trait they gained from living in the dark. Because they can produce their own light, slide under doors, divide their eyes, and have even developed x-ray vision, very little evades their spotlight. They retain a lot of the stereotypical pest behaviors, like not having the forethought to think deeply about others, so you could probably easily get one of these suckers to talk.
