IX PRESENTS THE TOP TEN BEST FRIENDS EPISODES
TEN: The One With The Lion: By season 17 the writers were just desperate to recapture the award winning chemistry that Ross had had with Marcel and that Joey and Chandler had had with the chick and the duck. It seemed like every episode of season 17 was just a new excuse to introduce a new animal pet for one of the friends in the hope that one of them would resonate with the audience and they'd have a good old fashioned hit on their hands. Ross got a dog. Phoebe got a parrot and wore it like a pirate for the entire season. Ross got another dog. Chandler got a bandicoot and tried to teach it to play video games. Ross got some more dogs. Monica got a pet lobster after she just couldn't bring herself to cook and eat the poor thing once she'd given it a name. Ross continued to accrue dogs. Joey ate Monica's lobster. Ross almost drowned in a sea of dogs. Chandler won an elephant from a local radio call in show. The whole season was a parade of animal guest stars which never quite worked, except for the lion from episode 19.

The plot of the episode was pretty simple: Rachel visits the zoo. In a fit of mischeivousness she unleashes the lion and allows it to rampage amongst the unsuspecting zoo-goers. Meanwhile Phoebe's husband Mike is continuing his season arc in which he attempts to find a way to upload human consciousness to a digital format. Due to his proximity to the zoo the lion bursts into his laboratory and in the ensuing chaos they end up switching bodies. Meanwhile Ross is hunting the lion. He stalks it through the busy New York streets, an unstoppable implacable force with only one single goal. Phoebe has some hijinks with the lion in Mike's body, but eventually discovers what has transpired. She races to Mike's Laboratory where Ross has the Mike Lion cornered. She desperately explains the situation to him, pleads with him to spare her husband lion's life. Of course we all remember the sadistic glee that Ross takes in mercilessly gunning down that poor escaped lion. Ah what a classic episode.
