You boot up Fortuna. After a long time playing this game, you've gotten a bit bored with it. Since then, you've tried lots of fan-made mods and challenges. Today, however, you'll try something completely new.
You will attempt to steal as many points as possible from the richest beings in the universe.
First thing's first though, you need to get some new patrons. Your last patrons were... a bit iffy. They just kept arguing with eachother. You remind yourself never to combine Opis and Cronus.
You've downloaded quite a few mods, and you want to try out a few of the new Eldritch AIs. The Lucifer mod is also intriguing.
You're greeted by a familiar face. You've always liked Kaufman. He's a bit... weird, but so are most characters in this game.
Which patrons will you pick?
Cthulhu
Show Content
SpoilerPowers
As a patron Cthulhu is very cryptic. He will often give you puzzling hints about guaranteed events. He will also be very friendly with most Eldritch AIs paired with him, but will be a bit upset with any non-Eldritch AIs, as he believes he is superior. Cthulhu will get very tired if nothing exciting happens in the game, and will go to sleep for one planet. During this period of time, the patron will be swapped with another non-Hastur Eldritch AI. Cthulhu will be woken up if anybody on your crew is murdered while he is sleeping, and will instantly become your patron again.
Pros
- Cthulhu’s hints, while cryptic, can be helpful under certain circumstances.
- No crew member’s intelligence can go below 3.
- All Eldritch AIs except one are automatically friendly to your crew no matter what.
- At least one crew member will gain the [Visions] trait during the game.
Cons
- The crew members that gain the [Visions] trait are also guaranteed to gain the [Abomination] trait during the game.
- Cthulhu will sometimes summon other Eldritch AIs to take his place as patron when he gets tired, which will change the patron powers you get.
- Your crew will attract cultists, who may or may not be extremely dangerous.
- All Hastur AIs are automatically hostile to your crew.
Hastur
Show Content
SpoilerPowers
Hastur is less of a patron and more of a powerful hireable character. Like Athena, he takes control of a character on your crew. Unlike Athena, Hastur basically becomes the character in question, allowing him to more directly influence your crew's actions. Any Eldritch AI paired with Hastur will hate him due to his obsessive hatred of his more popular brother.
Pros
-Hastur will join your crew in the body of a side character met on the first planet visited. He will aid in combat and strategical planning.
-Psychic powers are amplified in the vicinity of Hastur's avatar.
-Your crew will be able to call for help from cultists once every other planet in emergencies.
Cons
-All Cthulhu AIs will be attacked or challenged in combat by Hastur's avatar, stirring up unneeded trouble.
-Your crew will be hunted down by Hastur's original avatar, The King in Yellow, until Hastur's avatar is killed. Once the deed is done Hastur will leave as your patron and will be replaced by his brother.
-Most Eldritch AIs despise Hastur and will actively work against him.
Nyarlathotep
Show Content
SpoilerPowers
As a patron, Nyarlathotep will give your crew increased charisma and persuasive abilities. With his help you can amass a small army of crew members after only a few planets, given you have the ship size to hold them all.
Nyarlathotep will occasionally check in on your crew to see how you’re doing in many different forms. He will take 10% of your crew every three planets to join his own army. At Fortuna, he will attempt to kill the Fortuna boss and challenge you himself with his amassed army. If the boss is too tough for his army to defeat, he’ll have you join him to fight the true Fortuna boss.
Pros
- Your crew’s charisma can’t go below 5.
- More characters will attempt to join your crew.
- The captain gains the [Deceptive] trait.
Cons
- Your crew’s luck can’t go above 5.
- Your crew attracts more trouble.
- The captain gains the [Provocative] trait as well.
Chaugnar Faugn
Show Content
SpoilerPowers
As a patron, Chaugnar Faugn will let you take “special meat rations” from beings your crew kills. These “special meat rations” will lower morale if eaten, but will give +2 strength for a day. All crew members involved in killing the being being also get a strength bonus for the day, although it’s only +1.
Chaugnar Faugn is very hungry, and will require one being to die per planet. If the crew doesn’t kill a being on a planet then Chaugnar Faugn will take one of the crew as sacrifice himself. This can be avoided by gaining max friendship with him.
Pros
- More food.
- More strength.
- Blood loss is slowed drastically for crew members.
- All characters with over 4 red traits are friendly to your crew and will ask to join.
Cons
- The more food is “special meat rations”.
- Crew members that commonly eat “special meat rations” can gain the [Cannibal] trait. This negates the morale loss, but also makes the crew member a cannibal.
- Chaugnar Faugn requires sacrifices.
Lucifer
Show Content
SpoilerPowers
Lucifer is, as you probably expected, incredibly manipulative and strange. As a patron, Lucifer will give one crew member increased endurance and ludicrous luck for half of the game. For the other half, the crew member will “go rogue”, gain 3 red traits, and work against your crew from the inside. Lucifer will also attempt to trick you into working with his various plans, such as roomtrapping any AIs he deems “Inconvenient”, or manipulating a crew member into giving a valuable item to a certain friend of his.
Lucifer will also manipulate patrons he’s paired with to help him and you, which can be very useful for the more picky patrons. This, however, is still not too practical, as most patrons know not to trust Lucifer.
Pros
- Gives insane endurance and luck boosts
- Can manipulate some patrons he’s paired with
- Knows a lot about certain AIs
Cons
- He’s Lucifer
- Makes crew members turn against you
- Can manipulate you
You could also use one of the typical patrons paired with one of these new ones, if none of the combos seem like they'd work.
