I'd say persist in defending, and let Jay catch up!

ROUND 2
You Attack the ???. You deal 1 damage to ??? and it has 4 Health left. ??? Attacks you with a bolt of Chill! You take 2 - 1 = 1 damage and have 4 Health left. You are no longer Defending. Jay moves 4 steps to the west and is now directly north of ???. "BEAN, GET OUT OF THE WAY!" You move 3 steps east, out of the ???s radius of attack. ??? Defends. It will take 1 less damage from attacks this turn. Jay Attacks the ??? with Crescent Staff equipped. ??? takes 15 - 1 = 14 damage and is defeated. ??? dissipates in a puff of frosty smoke! YOU WIN!! Your EXP: 2/10 Jay puffs, shaken up a bit. "Yo, you alrigh', Bean? That shouldn'a happened."

Jay goes back to your seat and stuffs their weapon back into their backpack. "Huh, you didn't get hurt... that was a monster, Bean, a Chill Sprite. Luckily it was just a dumb baby sprite, I guess it mighta not learned to stay back from the tracks... all the monsters're suppose ta stay away, the tracks're like a border between our territory and monster territory. Yer lucky I was here, Bean, cause--" Two guards come through the train cars' connecting hall, followed by the civilian from earlier. The guards glance around, before turning to Jay. "You. There was a monster in here, correct?" Jay seems to stiffen a bit. "Yeh, thas' right. Not anymore, though." "Where did it go? It's important that you tell us." "It- it's gone, I banished it. Look, there's where it froze into the carpet." Jay points over at the ice spiking out of the carpet, and the guards approach it cautiously, inspecting it. "...Huh. Well, you leave that to us next time, yeah? It's our job, citizen. Your only job is to be an orderly passenger and keep your 2-D eyes out for any danger." "Yeah, I getcha..." "Please stay seated for the rest of the trip. We will inspect the other cars to make sure there are no other stowaway monsters." "Fine." Jay grumbles quietly as the guards move on to the next car. "No other stowaway monsters, hah..." As you watch Jay snarl quietly, a small realization comes to mind. Jay, is now a good time to ask about... um, why your head looks- "NO." A tone sounds over the intercom, and the conductor speaks up: "THERE WAS A SMALL MISHAP IN CAR #2, THIS IS NO LONGER AN ISSUE. PLEASE STAY IN YOUR SEATS AS WE DEPART FOR BONSAI." The train rattles a moment and starts speeding down the tracks once again.

Okay, instead, how about you tell us about those guards? Why were they acting weird? "The guards- I dunno. They don't like me. I have a lot more trouble with 'em than anyone else does. Dunno WHY, cause I'm a law-abidin' citizen jus' like the rest. They ain't got any dirt on me, though, so don' worry. I'll be fine, it's just... frustratin'." Huh... what about the sprite thing? "What about it?" Why did it attack us? "...Dunno. It was a monster. Again, no clue why it came onto the train in the first place, but monster's tend to be real hostile-like to people, which is why we have ta beat them down what chance we get." Alright... where do the monsters come from? "Uhhhh... depends. There's a lotta types of monsters, but basically, they're always on the other side of the train tracks, opposite the towns. See, there's this thing where, like... The Center of the Blossom, right, it's not good and you shouldn't go there. And the reason why, is cause it's fulla bad magic. There's just waves of bad magic flowing out of it like a thick breeze, and it's twisting everything it soaks into. Animals get all freaky, and old houses and towns out that far are all warped and dangerous... and then sometimes, the magic itself just lumps up into little monsters completely on its own, and those are Sprites." Oh... huh... So, monsters come from outside of the towns, out in the wilderness... Does that mean I'm a monster? "Wh- no! I mean, I don't think so? There's like- magic's pretty easy to sense, Bean, and ya ain't got that much magic comin' offa ya. I don't know what ya are, but as far as I care, yer just a person. A very different person from the rest of us, but a person noneth'less." Oh, that's a relief. A tone sounds over the speakers again, and the conductor speaks: "WE HOPE YOU ARE ENJOYING YOUR RIDE TODAY. WE ARE APPROACHING BONSAI AND WILL ARRIVE AT THE STATION SHORTLY."
