So I’m fielding questions about two things I got up to in these intervening years which, other than some p neat life milestones, are probably the two main things:

-Blaseball
-being a high school biology teacher in semi-rural New Zealand.
So yeah. I will take all questions until 3am Central European time on Saturday. Then someone else can take over this thread and tell us what they got up to.

ive been reading a lot of manga so im going to force you all to see it

earlier this year i read Burn the House Down by Moyashi Fujisawa which is an extremely good and dramatic manga that i CANT help but recommend, it is so suspenseful and the slow reveals of both what the events that brought the main character so much trauma and what shes doing in response to that are so fucking cool and i HAD to just keep going through it.

i also bought on a whim the first volumes of She loves to Cook, She Loves to eat, which is a really good comic about cooking and being adult women who doesnt want to prioritize men and shit, and Don't Call it Mystery which is not strictly a mystery manga but is about a guy who hates his dad a lot and keeps getting into situations that he has to deduce his way out of.

Delicious in Dungeon by Ryoko Kui ended earlier this year and you should drop everything to read it if you havent

my favorite ongoing manga rn is probably Liar Satsuki Can See Death which is a comic about a girl who can see death shadows, lingering dregs of a corpse, 24 hours before someone is fated to die. its about Satsuki, who keeps trying to warn people about this and comes off as an attention seeker opening up and meeting people who do care for her and also definitely do not, and its extremely good, if gorey at times. satsuki is disgustingly strong and she also knows so much about how people die.

Here, you can post about obscure pieces of media you've encountered, be it movies, video games, music, books, or otherwise. You can post clips or links if they’re available to you, but feel free to simply describe them if not.

There isn't any hard rule on how obscure it has to be. Just try to keep things within reason and avoid posting something super well-known like the original Die Hard, and you should be good.

For the first entry, I’ll discuss one of my favorite games of all time. It’s a first-person point-and-click adventure game from 1996 called Obsidian. The best way I can sum up the overall vibe is a sort of sci-fi Alice in Wonderland, though even that doesn’t do it justice. The game has such a unique brand of weird that I haven’t really seen anywhere else.

The basic premise is that you're is trapped in a sort of pocket-universe created by a godlike AI that became obsessed with dreams. You play as one of the scientists that created the AI.

Though it got a lot of glowing reviews, it sold very few copies, and to this day, almost nobody knows about it, which is a massive shame.

Here’s a small sample of the kind of stuff you’ll see in the game. Be sure the video starts at the 5 minute mark. Minor spoiler warning.

Ok so, after reading the “April Ban Log” thread, I feel like I need to tell you all something.

When I joined the forum, I was 12. I lied about my age because I wanted to go to the Fortuna part of the forum and attempt to contribute something to it because I was a huge fan of Fortuna and the Cosmosdex.

I’m assuming here that the part at the bottom of the file attached to “April Ban Log” is talking about me (the stuff about the “youngest user” and stuff) in which they say I should be 14 now, which is false because I lied. They were concerned about the fact that there could have been someone as young as 13 on the discord server. While I was not on the discord, I am 13 and the fact that, despite doing what they were doing around minors, that they would only stop and consider what they were doing if there was a 13 year old there, concerns me more than a little because if even they acknowledged that what they were doing wasn’t safe for 13 year olds then it was probably pretty bad.

I feel sort of like I’m in danger after reading the “April Ban Log” thread, because despite the fact that the events that happened were only on discord, those people were on this forum too and could have contacted me, and I’m concerned about the danger I could have put myself in and how the situation could have changed (most likely for the worse) if I were on the discondor chat at the time. I’m also quite concerned that they acknowledged me at all although I’m probably overthinking.

I understand if I am banned for some amount of time for lying about my age, because I see now that there is a reason that 12 year olds shouldn’t be able to be here. I am 13 now though, which is what I assume to be an acceptable age. Even then, I probably should have waited a year when I wanted to join. I realised that a few months ago and I hid my age, but people still saw it before I hid it, and I’m worried about the fact that they remembered this small piece of information (that being my (fake) age) for so long.

I’m not sure what to do about this current situation, and I’m sort of anxious right now to be honest, because these kinds of people may still be here.

It's that time of year again! Once again, Plaid and I will be running a little art/gift exchange for interested forumites.

All you need to do is sign up, and after the signup period closes, you'll be randomly assigned another participant to give an anonymous gift to. Your gift can be anything you're willing to provide - art, music, writing, photography, or even a package if you're so inclined. If you want to send a physical item, let us know and we'll see if your recipient is willing to give their address.

Plaid and I will both be participating, splitting the list in two so we don't know who our own Secret Santas are.

Signups will end on end-of-day midnight Mountain time on December 8th; that still leaves a bit over two weeks to put a gift together if you want it to be sent on Christmas. However, if you're going to be late, don't worry - we'll send the gift along when it's done.

That said, if you provide a gift by February 1 but have not received one, you can ask either of us for a gift in compensation.

Apologies for starting a bit later this year. So, without further ado, let's get this moving!

Participants:

1. Dragon Fogel
2. Plaid
3. a52
4. Vancho1
5. Schazer
6. Reyweld

Let's discuss some Primary-ish sources.

道德经 (The Way and Its Power)

There's multiple translations, and hover-over for individual characters - but since it's super ancient, there's a ton of interpretation involved. Still, it's interesting!

It could be worthwhile working through each of the 81 portions at a time - maybe one each week. Then we will have it done by a year.

The Lau translation has been pretty reliable in the past, so I'll be copy-pasting it here.

The Way and Its Power 1 Wrote:The way that can be spoken of
Is not the constant way;
The name that can be named
Is not the constant name.

The nameless was the beginning of heaven and earth;
The named was the mother of the myriad creatures.

Hence always rid yourself of desires in order to observe its secrets;
But always allow yourself to have desires in order to observe its manifestations.

These two are the same
But diverge in name as they issue forth.
Being the same they are called mysteries,
Mystery upon mystery -
The gateway of the manifold secrets.

The opener of the text.

I feel that it sets the foundation that the Dao is that of change and flux - reflected in that adage, "The only constant is change, (and that, too, changes)."

There's a bit of zen in the third block - but, it can be also viewed as "don't go looking for the Dao - if you go looking for it, you won't find it."
Insofar as desire is that want to seek the Dao. Since the core is a sort of "simple action" or even "action without doing."

This eschewing of category and names and pouring of all into mysteries, I feel, is what is being expressed here.

Bitsy is a tiny little gem of a game engine! You can use it to make little places to explore, and little folks and creatures to talk to. Some bitsy games evoke a grand sense of exploration in the vein of old-school adventure games, others succinctly capture a tiny experience. Most games are the perfect length to play on a coffee break.

You can make your very own bitsy games straight out of your browser from here!

The engine itself has a bunch of restrictions which I personally find makes for better exercises in design, such as:

3 colors max (for background, tiles, and sprites)

8x8 tile size

2 frames of animation per tile

16x16 tile screen size

It's super easy to pick and play around with, but a lot of people have done a lot of cool stuff with it! I even made a little thing in like, twenty minutes flat! you can talk to some birds and accomplish jack shit!

I think it'd be fun to have an Eagle Time bitsy game jam at some point, where we all spend a weekend or somesuch making tiny little games, but in the interim we can also use this thread to share cool bitsy games by other people.
