Lately I've been playing Don't Starve totally blind while a friend who's already played a lot of it watches over my shoulder and laughs (semi-revenge for me doing the same when he was playing Amnesia: The Dark Descent).

Yeah, it's plenty worth it.

I definitely have that attitude towards gaming genres as well.
Honestly, I don't know anyone who just likes one genre of games. (There are people who only play one game, but that's not exactly the same).
What I look for in video games is reasonable challenge and a tight and satisfying loop of player action to feedback (preferably in a way that informs the story). Storytelling is pretty important, as are visuals, but if that gameplay loop is strong enough I'll overlook most things. That can occur in any genre if the designers did their job.
I think there are certain genres, namely jrpgs, fpses and 2d platformers, that tend to be repetitive, but they still provide cool experiences on occasion. They're just oversaturated by lazy designers who try to repeat the successes of great older games by rehashing them.
Tile matching is probably far worse than any of these. Until this point I didn't actually realize it was an entire genre, but on second thought what the hell why would anyone make that many games which are all the same I can't even

RE: We chat about videogames and videogame accessories. - Stij - 10-04-2013

I generally agree with you on tile matching games, but I will ride for Meteos until the day I die

I think we talked about this once actually

RE: We chat about videogames and videogame accessories. - Romythered - 10-06-2013

so did we start a new thread or...
eh w/e

anyone wanna play terraria with me? I don't care who hosts, but if I host you'd need hamachi since I can't manually port forward on my router since it's not "MY" router

RE: We chat about videogames and videogame accessories. - weirdee - 10-06-2013

have you considered gamer anger i mean game ranger

https://www.gameranger.com/

all you have to do is connect once with every person who wants to come in with gamer anger

if you don't like using gamer anger, you can just leave that session and restart the game session without gamer anger on and all the other players that connected to you with it have the stored settings from that connection to link to what you used without any kind of complicated bullshit you would have had to do since terraria's network support is made out of silly string

RE: We chat about videogames and videogame accessories. - Solaris - 10-06-2013

i think that the funniest thing about that article is that it isnt some third party game dev it is a guy from sony like
why would you ever publish on competitor????

pretty hecked up that someone in charge of dev relations seems to have completely forgot developing on multiple platforms is harder???? he sure sounds good at his job

RE: We chat about videogames and videogame accessories. - MaxieSatan - 10-06-2013

I beat Brutal Legend today.

Generally speaking, it is not a good sign if one of the primary emotions evoked by your climactic, triumphant ending sequence is "what the fuck do you mean I'm already fighting the final boss, there was practically no build-up."

RE: We chat about videogames and videogame accessories. - Coldblooded - 10-07-2013

I really enjoyed playing through about the first half of Brutal Legend, but I'll never understand why they thought it was a good idea to switch genres from Action-Adventure to Poorly-Put-Together-RTS halfway through the game for no discernible reason.

It's like the development teams were making two completely different games and then just decided to smash the two of them together near the end.

RE: We chat about videogames and videogame accessories. - Robust Laser - 10-07-2013

Uh, it became an RTS pretty early on. Even the early parts were training for when you get started on the first stage battle, which is still less than halfway through the game. And if you don't think the beatin' dudes up and teaming up with units is part of getting you trained for battle, then you could be doing the stage battles wayyyyy more effectively.

On a related note, I think the game was supposed to be longer, with the Tainted Coil having their own big section of the story instead of just showing up at the beginning and end briefly. But, budget, or something.

Basically they got chain-yanked by publishers way more than they cared for on that project (that includes legal trouble during the critical last-minute-panic stage of game development known as crunch).

That’s a big factor in why they’ve taken pains to start self-publishing of late. As the old saying goes, “Fool me——you can't get fooled again.”

RE: We chat about videogames and videogame accessories. - MaxieSatan - 10-07-2013

I knew about the RTS aspects from the beginning, so I wasn't surprised per se, and I was even kind of looking forward to them, but they felt awkward and the controls weren't great (though maybe that's a using-the-keyboard issue) and they suffered from a kind of weirdness of scale that plagued the game on the whole. They felt too small and too big at the same time.

To be fair, from what I've heard of Schafer (particularly with how Broken Age is going), he doesn't seem to be super great at managing time and money in general, so I think Double Fine getting ahead of themselves was a major problem. But yeah, the whole Activision-suing-EA thing certainly didn't help anyone.

I still don't fucking know how I felt about the game as a whole, to be honest. It's deeply flawed, but there are also some aspects I love? I guess I'd put it in the same category as Deadly Premonition, i.e. "the gameplay isn't great but it wouldn't really work in any other medium and the aspects that do work were probably worth it I suppose."

I hate to be the one to post a Kickstarter, but this looks pretty interesting. The people behind it are pretty skilled as well, and I think they could definitely pull it off.

I liked AA2 Meloncholy

I'd also vote Ghost Trick, though. Don't recommend Mass Attack in general, it was a bit of a disappointment.

RE: We chat about videogames and videogame accessories. - BRPXQZME - 10-08-2013

Then you have enough of an opinion on it to justify putting it off; case in point ;P

RE: We chat about videogames and videogame accessories. - Granolaman - 10-09-2013

How violently against getting an Acekard are you?

RE: We chat about videogames and videogame accessories. - Nopad - 10-09-2013

While it's very good, Ghost Trick is rather short. (I completed it in half a weekend, and I'm not the kind of guy who normally finishes games in one weekend. That's both a good and a bad sign: the game put a stranglehold on my attention for those days, but it also ran out of content in that amount of time.) If you're worried about running out of things to do with your new console before you can get a new game, I'd recommend a longer game such as TWEWY or even Ace Attorney 2.

RE: We chat about videogames and videogame accessories. - Infrared - 10-12-2013

MadWorld is frustrating because i like the art design (i know nothing about Sin City tho) but everything else is dumb and boring. I dig the soundtrack though.

Speaking of stylish action games that suffer from juvenile crap dumped into them, Viewtiful Joe 2 is such a fucking letdown. I love VJ, but the sequel is so stupidly sexist towards Sexy Silvia (whose name i'm more than okay with considering Joe is... well "Viewtiful") which is weird, since in the first game she was the stock damsel in distress, but she's promoted to a co-protagonist in the sequel, i guess they just had less time to be sexist towards her in the first game 'cause she had less screen time. I liked her a whole lot more when she was just a re-skin of Joe in the first game, she kicked major ass.

Holy shit that is green.

My real initials spell out a real three-letter word, most commonly interpreted as one of a number of venomous snakes (most of them are kinda cute once you get past the whole deadly poison and/or ophidiophobia thing). Problem/Bonus: it makes it look like I’m about to be That Guy™.
