But your adversary's steel gauntlets stay firmly locked on the hilt of the sword as you both struggle to gain the upper hand and cleave the other in twain. (Roll 13+6 Vs Roll 11+8) Touching the sword feels somehow wrong, instilling you with a sense of unease. You do get a feel for its capabilities, though. Blade of Thorns Doubles your Power. What the hell was he thinking sharing power with a spirit so insane? The world was spinning, or was that the myriad of souls spinning through and around the chamber? The screaming didn't seem to stop; perhaps those cries were real? Could they have been his companions lost in the ravings of a madman? Everything, his head notwithstanding, was in throbbing pain. Charging at the nearest shadow monster, you bring your hammer to bear as it turns to face you just in time to for the blow to take it full in what passes for its face, dealing 455 damage (roll 7+6, crit)! The monster hardly seems to care, however, as it recklessly launches itself at you, jaws snapping and claws flailing. You were ready for this, having observed the same self-destructive behavior numerous times already, nimbly dodging out of the way of its linear attacks. The giant sword in her hand and the two spears on her back weighed her down, making her have to bend her legs and back so as not to crumple from the weight. With her lower vantage point and the creatures blocking a good portion of her view, Savannah failed to notice Mayor's departure. Certainly, she'd be crushed. You pick out the largest of the monsters, steering straight for it, blade lashing out in a brutal stab that impales the flaming blade in the chest of your foe, inflicting 720 damage plus 225 burn damage. (roll 13+11+8) Then one of the monsters rakes its claws across your back, inflicting only 60 damage but distracting you long enough for the large one in front of you to step inside your guard, still impaled on your sword, and ram its scythe arm into your belly, dealing 460 damage! Then both of them are enveloped in an inferno of fire, leaving behind only wisps of dark smoke that vanish into thin air. Murder occupied all corners of her mind and she wasn't about to stop, it was pleasing to her to see more monsters approaching, she could always go for more targets to shoot at. Glaring down at the enemies surrounding you, you conjure a barrage of fireballs to incinerate them, consuming four corshari in a fiery inferno for 882 damage each. In a flash of vibrant color, you heal yourself and your allies for 117 health each, renewing them with creative insight and reducing their cooldowns (Roll 4+6)! Your soldier finally snaps out of it, turning to fight the nearest corshar, bravely stabbing the monster with its spear for 166 damage (roll 16+1, crit)! The corshar attempts to rake the soldier, but seems unable to properly damage the inky man, dealing only 20 damage. Meanwhile, another corshar comes charging at you, wildly screeching and slashing at you! You take a step back, avoiding the outburst entirely. Heck, maybe one will be AoE! ;w; 9 Taking advantage of your distraction, the two corshari in front of you both slash at your paint barrier for 140 and 180 damage! You can see two more of the beasts further out in the cave running towards you and Thunderpaw. You call on the power of the staff and... Nothing happens. Except, you feel an odd urge overcome you, as if you are suddenly unbound from shackles you never knew you had. Savannah's rapidly withering jungle suddenly seems very appealing. Unchecked magical energy wells up within you, held back only by a snap decision. The dull souls filling the cavern continue to grow in number, flooding into the cave in streams from the pedestal at the center of Remah's room. More of them change, enveloped in dark smoke and shortly afterwards turning into new corshari to join the fray. Stats RE: Black Zenith [Adventure RPG / Chapter Four: Fires of Heaven] - ICan'tGiveCredit - 07-25-2015 As Watson grapples with his clinking combatant, his face puffs up... before he expels a burgeoning puff of flame from his mouth into the inner chassis! This will hopefully melt it and soften its grip on the sword which he must not allow to fall in the wrong hands. The fire leaves a fragrant scent in the air. Watson should find some way of purifying that sword later, so as to not permit it control of his heart. If it has been conceived of such a process, he is definitely wont to find it out! But in all likelihood he will probably not know of it too soon as his comrades are currently embarking on a quest and investigating such a practice would require contact with... magismiths. Watson is wary of magic. But So why, then, does he have this hesitation of finding them? Will it not be for the betterment of the world to reforge it for use by the honourable? Perhaps when his troop finds time for leisure, he will tackle the task. Constant enemy-spawning seems like a retreat situation but Thundy aint running first. Again.) RE: Black Zenith [Adventure RPG / Chapter Four: Fires of Heaven] - BlazerC - 07-28-2015 Bohw's mind was a tattered mess, flinching away from the melee as she grabbed her forehead. Her expression seemed to of be changing erratically, there was some battle going on inside her head for control of the body, not even able to recall what had happened only moments ago. "Mayor...?" Before she could think too much about her actions, Bohw then caught sight of the seemingly endless tide of monsters that was pouring into the room. Both sides of her had to agree on one thing at least, they weren't going to be able to stop these monsters this way. "Thunderpaw!" She called, placing her feet firmly on the ground as she started to weave some kind of rune together, "Use that... Blade of Light! Stop these monsters, now!" barking an order. There was some clear disgust in her voice, Bohw's wicked side didn't like the idea of the damn blade, but it was the only trump card they had left. Carrying out her spell, Bohw aimed to curse all the Regnant Corshar with runes of weakness, crippling their overall power and hopefully buying some for the others. RE: Black Zenith [Adventure RPG / Chapter Four: Fires of Heaven] - MasterBlade - 07-28-2015 "I only got one shot lass!" Thunderpaw shouted, parrying the attacks of the Corshar before him. "I only got enough power for one target, I can only banish one ounce of darkness... or restore one ounce of light." The knight paused, as if suggesting another target Bohw had not considered in her haste. "Make yer choice, and make the right one. There's not much time left..." RE: Black Zenith [Adventure RPG / Chapter Four: Fires of Heaven] - SupahKiven - 07-28-2015 Savannah feels the jungle drain away, robbing her of her unnatural strength. The sword drops from her grasp, clanging against the ground. Despite that, Savannah can still feel the dregs of her strength, persisting in her muscles and leaving her questionably stronger than normal, though whether or not it's just an after effect remains to be seen. That's when the world lights up around her, flames licking at her tattered sweater but otherwise leaving her unharmed, aside from a few singed hairs. Savannah growls, picking off a loose strand that reeks with that nasty burnt hair smell. She mutters angrily to herself even as she draws Remah's weapon from it's strange sheathe on her back, preparing to give more of these Corshar assholes the business. "Ooh, 'not all fire consumes', hardy har har. I'm a stupid fire snake har har..." Tightening her grip on the glaive's shaft, Savannah scopes out her next target. Just a bunch of the little guys. Fine by her. This should be easy street. She springs forward, slashing at one of the Corshar with the blade of the glaive, then sweeping in the other direction with it as a follow up. RE: Black Zenith [Adventure RPG / Chapter Four: Fires of Heaven] - chimericWilder - 07-28-2015 despite not even having been that many updates ago its probably still worth pointing out, but Quote:Mael'dival Cyndane RE: Black Zenith [Adventure RPG / Chapter Four: Fires of Heaven] - BlazerC - 07-29-2015 (It's not like that would be very clear to Thunderpaw- he's playing in character!) "What are you, stupid?!" Bohw snapped, stressed enough as it is. With one hand pointing at the pedestal in the middle of Remah's room, she continued to shout at him. "That pedestal where they are all spawning from! Hurry!" RE: Black Zenith [Adventure RPG / Chapter Four: Fires of Heaven] - MasterBlade - 07-30-2015 Thunderpaw nodded, disengaging from the foe before him to make a clear shot. He would summon the blade and hurl it, crossing fingers that it struck true. You spew forth a torrent of fire, the deteriorating armor struggling against you as you bathe it in flames. (Hit 3+5 Vs Defense 8, Roll 5+6 Vs Roll 4+8). You burn the revenant aswell as two corshari that had the poor fortune to have formed within your line of fire, dealing 289 damage to each of them. In turn, you are yourself burned for 240 damage by the super-heated armor that stubbornly continues to grapple with you for control of the sword. It is weakening. Also, you now have two angry corshari clawing at your face. You nimbly duck behind the armor to avoid one swing, but the other manages to rake you across your left arm for a nasty 300 damage. Without a new source of magic to feed upon, your jungle crumbles away to dust, leaving you to discard the greatsword in favor of a lighter weapon. Just as Bohw helped you mere moments ago, she now curses you with pain to drain your strength. You charge on regardless, lashing out at the nearest pair of newly-minted monsters, striking first one and then the other for 315 damage to each of them! (Roll 12+8, Crit) They then lunge at you. You duck below one clawswing (Hit 5+2 Vs Defense 7), then parry another with the haft of the glaive, its claws scraping your fingers for a minor 45 damage. Ink Soldier Wrote:Stab. The ink soldier stabs the corshar in front of it for 78 damage (roll 7+1, crit), and is then summarily torn to shreds by the selfsame corshar, ripping the soldier apart to inflict 150 damage! You draw on the light of the crystals as you have done before, summoning it with sevenfold power - and they react like never before, spinning into orbit around the blade, flowing streams of light feeding into a mutual manifestation. With no time to dwell on the further meaning of this, you carefully take aim at the pedestal. You briefly consider whether bunni paws truly bring luck or if it is only a myth. Then you hurl the sword. It flies end over end, traveling smoothly through the narrow gateway leading into Remah's room. Your aim proves true as the blade strikes home at the base of the pedestal, erupting into an explosion of light that obliterates the enchanted stone structure, the wave of light blinding you for a moment. When next you can see, the blade of light is hanging suspended in midair within a chaotic rift of energy where the pedestal stood before, souls welling up from within the rift to form a spirit vortex swirling around the sword. Stats RE: Black Zenith [Adventure RPG / Chapter Four: Fires of Heaven] - ICan'tGiveCredit - 08-09-2015 Watson's skin sizzles as the emblem of the armor is imprinted onto his exposed knuckle. He cries out in pain at the intense burning... of a symbol of allegiance not his own! But he presses on, screaming until the armor buckles to the ground. From then on, Watson and the armor roll around along the floor, clamoring for better positioning to skewer the other. They leave a path of crushed corshari in their wake, those two decrepit and stupid to dodge out of the way. Couldn't he have thought of a better idea to overcome this soulless hunk of steel? Why... yes he could! While wrestling the armor to the ground, Watson ponders his next move. It is, after all, now that he realizes that they are completely surrounded by dark puppets and this seems to be a great time of thinking new ways to crush them. RE: Black Zenith [Adventure RPG / Chapter Four: Fires of Heaven] - SupahKiven - 08-11-2015 "Son of a-!" Savannah goes down on a knee, from both her barely pulled off dodge and Bohw's curse. The magic sizzles on her skin, sending stinging needles into her nerves. "We're on the same team, damn it!" She glances back just in time to see Bohw getting bowled over by one of the bigger ones. This could definitely be going better. There was a flash of light behind her that she ignored, tightening her grip on her weapon before striking once again. Leaping up from her crouch, Savannah stabs the glaive into the corshar that grazed her with its last attack. Still moving forward, she plants her feet onto its head, pushing off of it and janking her weapon out of it in the process. Savannah uses the momentum to her advantage, slashing at another corshar midair before landing on a third, stabbing down into it with the blade of her glaive. RE: Black Zenith [Adventure RPG / Chapter Four: Fires of Heaven] - chimericWilder - 08-19-2015 well, i always knew that this game wouldnt die before my players lost interest. with over a month since the last post, it would be fair to conclude that that is now just as well, really. though i'll regret not reaching the end, this game still ran for over three years (i think?) and taught me plenty of lessons underway. my next project will certainly involve a whole lot less meaningless combat. and maybe actual story & free will. RE: Black Zenith [Adventure RPG / Chapter Four: Fires of Heaven] - Psych - 08-20-2015 I've been incredibly busy with a new job working nights and sleeping days so I apologize for not posting, but if you decide you're ending it then so be it. Honestly I really like your combat system chim and would love to know more about it and how you balance since I kind of would love to be able to run it or something on a different site or whatever. It's also just usually hit stuff or heal team and actions that aren't those two are never efficient enough to really be worth using as I have found out making support characters. RE: Black Zenith [Adventure RPG / Chapter Four: Fires of Heaven] - chimericWilder - 08-20-2015 oh, well that explains your absence atleast. Well if i still get posts i'll update regardless, but at this rate we'll never make it as there're still two chapters to go and yea buffing stats might not be the most efficient method to get stuff done. In New Dawn however buffing Power was so ridiculously powerful that you could spend a few turns supercharging yourself before making a giant attack that would do many times the amoount of damage that just hitting things repeatedly would, especially when used with a strong special. This made it inefficient to use damaging specials at all outside of being really buffed up. A minmaxing player might see their big nuke about to come off cooldown and feel forced to start buffing up in order to be efficient at all. I thought that was poor design. Buffing Power should, i think, be fairly balanced right now. Buffing strength, def or whatever works in a completely different way however and you are right that the formula i have used for that has been underperforming shields are odd because i've never actually made them perform stronger than heals, but they have short durations so their only advantage over a heal is that you can put them on someone with full health. not sure why i havnt changed that before. tell you what, shields will now be 50% more efficient than heals, provided that the entire shield is used up before expiring. not that that matters since i've already assumed this game is gone and burried honestly the strength of this system has never been that its balanced, efficient or fun, but rather that it allows for lots of opportunity for drama. in my opinion, anyway. RE: Black Zenith [Adventure RPG / Chapter Four: Fires of Heaven] - MasterBlade - 08-20-2015 I apologize for not being on-top of things. My ability to do play-by-posts has waned significantly over the past year, probably from job-related stress. My delaying until Blazer posted to prevent another 'thunderpaw runs off preemptively' and not being able to contribute for half a year cause of sidechat contributed to my general loss of interest. Also the last post was made a week ago. Not a month. RE: Black Zenith [Adventure RPG / Chapter Four: Fires of Heaven] - chimericWilder - 08-20-2015 it appears that you are correct. it would seem that time passes at glacier-speed for me, leading me to not even check the bloody date properly and instead just jumping to wild conclusions about how its been foreverrrrr RE: Black Zenith [Adventure RPG / Chapter Four: Fires of Heaven] - Psych - 08-21-2015 Yeah we've gone longer than a week before lol maybe I also need to start being more creative than just buffs/debuffs/shields because most of Renzo's rest of his kit was pretty interesting in terms of saving rolls and helping with dice RE: Black Zenith [Adventure RPG / Chapter Four: Fires of Heaven] - MasterBlade - 08-23-2015 Well, noone seems to be pulling a last-minute revival. I'll have to conclude as well that this seems to be the end. And a damn shame too; I had such wonderful plans for the end. Shenanigan-ey plans. RE: Black Zenith [Adventure RPG / Chapter Four: Fires of Heaven] - chimericWilder - 08-23-2015 well i'll still be checking back in case someone decides otherwise but for now my focus will be elsewhere RE: Black Zenith [Adventure RPG / Chapter Four: Fires of Heaven] - ICan'tGiveCredit - 08-23-2015 (08-23-2015, 10:19 AM)MasterBlade Wrote: »Well, noone seems to be pulling a last-minute revival.
