Blue whales are birds!
Zoofights, while an extremely good guess, are not birds.
Platypuses are not birds.
Tasmanian devils are not birds.
Velociraptors, Jurassic Park or otherwise, are not birds.
Squid are birds!

RE: What ARE birds? - Akumu - 04-12-2016

Now I'm sort of upset that my birds wasn't animals that have been Zoofights competitors

AS YOU SHOULD BE. Trog Demands Blood!

Are animals that have never been represented in a drawing birds?

Are organisms that are not animals birds?

Are Elephants birds?
Are gorillas birds?

Are dinosaurs who are not Tyrannosauruses birds?

RE: What ARE birds? - Akumu - 04-12-2016

Out of the previous three posts, kangaroos and gorillas are birds. Some non-animal organisms are birds. Everything else asked is not birds.

RE: What ARE birds? - chimericgenderbeast - 04-13-2016

Are plants birds?
Are fungi birds?
Are bacteria birds?
Are archaea birds?
Are protists birds?

RE: What ARE birds? - Gatr - 04-13-2016

Is what makes a bird taxonomically determined?

I kinda feel like it's cheating to ask this. Is it okay for me to ask questions related to the nature of the criteria?

RE: What ARE birds? - btp - 04-13-2016

I don't think taxonomy is a big deal for birds right now.

All of the mentioned birds are relatively popular animals. The T-rex is the only dinosaur that is a bird, Alligators are birds but not crocodiles, I wouldn't be surprised if kangaroos are the only marsupial birds and gorillas are the only primate birds.

Saying that animals that have not been represented in a drawing are not birds suggests that the category of what constitutes a bird is a reasonably referencable list, and that it is not a particular physical or behavioral trait of the organism.

Also zoofights, for anyone wondering, was a repeating collaborative web-comic/popularity contest wherein mutilated versions of animals fought one another and ridiculousness happened. Akumu actually did some of the art for one!

What I'm not sure of though is where birds come from.

Are marsupials that are not kangaroos birds?
Are primates that are not gorillas birds?
Are venus fly traps birds?
Are sea turtles birds?
Are non-human animals with sapience birds?
Are passerines that are not in the order Cordova birds?

RE: What ARE birds? - Crowstone - 04-13-2016

Are ghosts birds

RE: What ARE birds? - Akumu - 04-13-2016

Okay let's do this thing.

Some plants are birds.
Some fungi are birds.
Bacteria are not birds.
Archaea are not birds.
Protists are not birds.

Gatr's question is not well-posed! At this stage I don't think I will answer.

Non-kangaroo marsupials are not birds.
Some non-gorilla primates are birds.
Venus fly traps are not birds.
Sea turtles are not birds.
Some non-human animals with sapience are birds, maybe.
All passerines are in the order Passeriformes, so, some.

Ghosts are not organisms so are not birds.

okay I'm gonna try something.

Are the organisms that share a taxonomical trait that is exclusive to organisms that are birds but is not simply a listing of the names of organisms that are birds, birds?

Are Monkeys birds?
Are Flowers birds?
Are pacman birds?

RE: What ARE birds? - Akumu - 04-13-2016

Gymnosperms are not birds.
Some angiosperms are birds.
Some monkeys are birds.
Some flowers are birds.
Pacmen are not birds.

To your convoluted question, I believe the answer is no, those things are not birds.

RE: What ARE birds? - Crowstone - 04-14-2016

Btp is asking if what birds are in this game, if all the birds are simply from a huge list, or do birds actually have something in common with each other.

(and not a list like "list of all things with this common trait" but something more arbitrary like that "things that were in zoofights")

Are ants birds?
Are cockroaches birds?
Are beetles birds?
Bees?
Wasps?
Termites?
Toads?
Turtles?
Hermit Crabs?

RE: What ARE birds - btp - 04-14-2016

It was more like,
In an attempt to ask gatrs question in a "are ______ birds?" format I figured

If there was a name-basis to what birds are, similar to schazer's birds, then all organisms that were birds would share an exclusive trait, but if birds are not determined by a characteristic of their names then there is no such thing as a taxonomic trait exclusive to birds and thus there are no organisms that fit the given description - hence them not being birds.

But it could be said that the exclusive taxonomic trait is that they all belong to a list of names of names of the given organisms - hence the extra caveat.

But also by that point I realized I was getting too far away from the spirit of bird-game and too close to playing Nomic.
