You can pick anyone on the crew (or no one at all) to join Clay at the machine. You cannot fuse the items of anyone who isn't at the machine but you are free to fuse any two items in storage.
As such when suggestion please suggest a person to come with Clay, and then suggest an item combo. (You may only suggest one combo but you're free to second as many other people's combos as you want.)
